Amanda. Digital Communications Specialist

Explain as simply as possible what you do

My role is Digital Communications Specialist at Fortescue Metals Group. I am responsible for ensuring the companies messaging and vision are understood and accepted by the public (government, community, business and general public)

Do you remember what you wanted to do with your life when you were a teenager?

I changed my mind all the time - at one stage I wanted to be a Doctor and I also considered joining the Army (following in my dads’ footsteps)

What was the best career/life advice from a mentor you’ve ever been given?

Act like you are working in the job above your role or where you want to be it will get you there quicker

I watched a great video with Ashton Kutcher the other day that I think is great life advice for teenagers link here https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=FNXwKGZHmDc

"I've been working since I was 13 in so many different jobs including McDonalds, Nannying and a boat deckhand. After travelling I got a FIFO job on the mines in a field assistant role (getting dirty) for Fortescue which after three years led me to the role I'm in now." Amanda

Explain a ‘typical’ day for you at work.

Fortunately, no day is really typical at work but my day can involve liasing with the media, managing our social media accounts and website, creating videos, coming up with communication strategies...

Which part of your job gives you the most satisfaction.

I love being under pressure and working to tight deadlines. It is pretty satisfying seeing your hard work play out in the media.

It is also great seeing how big companies can make a difference to the community for example the work we are doing in the Indigenous Development space.

For someone who wants to do your job what skills, experience or qualifications would you recommend?

Obviously great communication skills in particular written communication are vital.

My degree in Marketing and Public Relations helped me get my job but the work experience I did during my studies was by far the most valuable.

Design and digital skills are increasingly important.

Tell us briefly how you ended up doing what you do. Did you do many other jobs or start many other businesses before?

I've been working since I was 13 in so many different jobs including McDonalds, Nannying and a boat deckhand.

After travelling I got a FIFO job on the mines in a field assistant role (getting dirty) for Fortescue which after three years led me to the role I'm in now.

What one piece of advice would you give to younger generations still at school today?

Find a mentor or even better a few mentors and try different jobs in a variety of fields before deciding what you want to do at University.

Enjoy school! You won't realise until you leave how lucky you are to be given an education and you will never have as much time on your hands to just learn.

What was the best year of your life and why?

Each year has been great for me. I firmly believe in the motto 'life works out best for those that make the best of the way life works out'

I make sure that every year I work hard, plan adventures to look forward to and spend plenty of time with family and friends.

How do you believe schools and or universities might be changed to be more relevant or effective?

I firmly believe that schools need to teach more real life skills such as how to do your tax, how to buy a house, make wise investments and manage your money.

When I was at school I really had no idea what kind of jobs were out there - programs that help you connect with people in different jobs are invaluable!
