Digital Media agency
On what he does
I run a digital marketing agency, we help businesses grow via targeted marketing campaigns that make sure businesses are seen when their clients are searching for them online, spending time on social media and other websites of interest. Simply put, we help Aussie businesses dominate the digital age!
Do you remember what you wanted to do with your life when you were a teenager?
Hmm lots of things! I always wanted to be an ambulance driver because I think it would be so cool to be racing around town rescuing people. I also wanted to be a fireman but I think most young boys want that. As a teenager I always wanted to build something whether that was buildings or companies, I wasn't exactly sure what I wanted, I just knew I wanted to do something that would be of impact (and fun!)
What was the best career/life advice you’ve ever been given?
Give, give, give of yourself in all you do. As soon as you start recording and tracking how much someone has given you in return whether that be a romantic partner or in business/friendships etc you start to become in a transactional relationship which is a killer. I was told you must provide 10x more value in business than you are being paid for, whether you are an employee or running the business you must always do more than you are paid for to progress to the next level.
Which part of your job gives you the most satisfaction?
Seeing people I have mentored and trained develop and really have confidence that they can achieve what I know they can.
If you have worked with any recent grads. What skills do you believe recent university graduates are lacking (if any) today and what strengths do they bring?
Do they understand social media in a way that is relevant to business?
I feel an area of lack can more be in attitude than skills. Anyone can train skills to someone that wants to learn and grow, but they must really want to otherwise it's like hitting your head against a brick wall :)
Many grads are digital natives meaning they have grown up with digital so are confident in how it works and can quite readily understand and appreciate how it can be very beneficial to businesses.
What one piece of advice would you give to your 15-year-old self?
Ask questions! Seek out people who are most likely to know the answer to any questions you have on business, relationships, creating wealth, creating a life you want. People who have done it are ALWAYS happy to share their experiences and show you the mistakes they've made. If someone can tell you how to avoid a mistake in 10 minutes that cost them years of their life or even was deadly to their business that is very powerful.
Did you have any jobs as a teenager?
Yep. My first entrepreneurial endeavour I can remember was selling eggs at school to the teachers. I had a business partner who helped me, until I realised that I collected the eggs each day from my chicken pen, I sold them to the teachers and he just hung around and got half the proceeds - not a great deal for me! Other jobs were cleaning boats and I worked on my parents’ farm.
How do you believe schools of universities might be changed to be more relevant or effective?
Become more practically relevant. Schools and universities can be at times too "academic" and place value purely on academic scores which are sometimes important but I can tell you I'll hire and do hire attitude over anything else. It's a shame but schools don't provide any teaching on how our mind works, e.g. we get amazing manuals on how to operate a fridge we buy but we aren't taught how to understand our mind and awareness etc. Also, I think education on building financial security and ensuring you create your life the way you want it to be would be so so valuable.
What are you most proud of?
Hmm I'm pretty proud of where I am with Be Media, I honestly see it as a simple reflection of massive determined action over a period of time, and never giving up!
